bestow upon me, your knowledge of the old Kia Sportage and why I should or should know buy one as my shitty weekend, hauling stuff to the beach car! What should I be aware of?
For this service, I reward thee with.... a bananna.

How much shit are you hauling to need a jacked up, body cladded midsize car?
I go to the beach just fine with a Miata. Really wondering what yall bring to warrant these big cars.

you want to buy a car to haul shit? get a minivan or a pickup truck.
you want to of off road? knock off the minivan, pick up truck.

They’re hardy. Don’t expect anything you don’t need to work, but the engine should keep putting along.

It looks pretty good.

For Canada, where are you when we need you??

Wrong side of the pond, but damn, that’s still a good price.

Just checking and asking questions. It literally would only need to haul stuff at the most, 10 miles. probably less, and just on the weekend.

4 mountain bike/beach cruisers and a kayak or two and possibly a grill....beach stuff. I just care that it won’t leave me stranded.

If you don't need 4wd, I would get an old Cherokee, the 2wd versions sell for pennies. Grew up in a surf town, these were popular sand boxes.

Buy a first-gen CRV. Better all around car unless you really need body-on-frame. IN which case what the hell are you towing?

Not too worried about perfection. Just need enough guts to get me there and back again.

Yeah it’s one of the cleaner £400 cars I’ve seen.

Apparently the first gens ran a Mazda engine, which is surprising.

Just bikes and weekend gear.

...that wouldnt fit in a sportage. You need a full size truck if you’re bringing all that. Just rent one for the day.

beater pick up.

I used a minivan for utility hauling/winter beater duties and it was perfect. Just take out all of the seats and you have a huge volume to fill full of stuff plus you have the roof rack. The bonus was that I could do just about any speed and the cops never took notice and it’s very freeing to drive a vehicle that you do not give a rat’s ass about.

If he goes to the beach many weekends a year, why would he choose to rent every time?
![]() 08/17/2015 at 15:24 |
|
They suck offroad and aren’t exactly fancy, but we had one and it had zero issues in the 130k miles we owned it.
![]() 08/17/2015 at 15:25 |

If you go to the beach a few times a year..should you buy a car just for those few days? It would be more cost effective to not pay taxes and insurance on a car you barely use. Not even considering maintenance of wear items at least and the initial purchase price.
![]() 08/17/2015 at 15:30 |

Everything about this sounds like he lives somewhere he plans to go to the beach very often. Obviously if it’s a one week vacation once a year, sure, rent. But “weekend beach car” sure sounds like he plans to go to the beach most weekends, and he said he only has to drive 10 miles when he goes. The logistics of renting a car every weekend to drive 10 miles sound miserable. Let him buy a car for a couple grand to get to the beach instead of spending every weekend at the rental counter.

Off road isn’t a problem. Nothing more off road than a gravel parking lot.

Even shitty vans out here seem to be kind of pricy unless they have some pretty serious engine issues the owners just don’t want to deal with...Even the ugly duckling Aztek.

I thought about it. I like the Rangers well enough, but I would rather have something I can lock up.
![]() 08/17/2015 at 15:41 |

The roof rack would pretty much do it, I think.
![]() 08/17/2015 at 15:42 |

Didn’t know that, but I like Mazdas, so I’ll mark that in the “pros” column.

Oh yeah, sorry. I live in San Diego. beaches all over the place. Not a lot of hauling capacity with my Fiat 500 or with my wife’s Mazda 6. 10 miles is round trip for the area that we tend to frequent the most.
![]() 08/17/2015 at 15:50 |

Didn’t think about those. I’ll have to see if there are any the desert rats haven’t chewed up too bad.

Here are some fun tidbits from the Kia Sportage wikipedia page :
The first generation Kia Sportage was developed with a
Mazda Bongo
engineering base platform. It shares many mechanical components such as the engine, transmissions (early versions), and differentials with the
Mazda
line of vehicles.
This first generation model (1993–2002) sold in low numbers even domestically in South Korea, and post-Hyundai takeover models (1997–2002) were recalled twice for rear wheels dismounting while driving.
The Kia Sportage scored the lowest possible result in the Australian ANCAP crash tests – one star out of five. As well as a failure of the seatbelts, the vehicle structure collapsed.

Then our’s was fine. My Dad regretted getting rid of it when we bought our ‘05 Impala. It was wore out more in 15k miles than our 130k mile ‘99 Kia. The offroad issue can be mended by manual locking hubs.

I’m gonna just put this On the table I have a 91 Volvo 740 that I can’t kill, maybe be better/cheaper. They are not nice after so many years but man they are fing tanks also plent of cargo and if it breaks I think the scrap value is worth more then the car (I got mine 750 bucks)
![]() 08/17/2015 at 16:21 |

Those are also in the running, but I’ve never had one, so I’m not really sure what to expect of them.

If mine is any indication, loud muffler is missing, I don't mind that. Also torn up seats and no radio, also no speedo, or tac, but it's really stable at 90mph and its God great brakes

ranger with a bed lid. done.
really, for the bikes and what not, a sportage isnt going to do you much good.

No, not to lock the bikes in, other stuff. Bikes on top....
